Smart meters – The intelligent electricity meter
Lower your energy costs with smart metering
The meter readings can be performed at any interval. The higher the frequency, the more granular the data. For instance, a query interval of one minute for electricity consumption or supply provides a very accurate "consumption picture" and allows peak loads to be detected immediately.
The collected data can be stored locally on gateways or PCs in the network. Traditionally, databases are used for this purpose, which collect the measured values. Open source tools, such as Grafana, can then visualize the collected data and allow you to see at a glance where your consumption behavior can be optimized.
These tools give you various possibilities for evaluating the total consumption or assessing individual machines. Would you prefer to concentrate on your core business rather than dealing with energy issues? We can help you there, too: We are happy to connect you with one of our partners. This means that we handle everything – from the sensors to data collection and the visualization apps. All you have to do is enjoy the savings on energy costs!

Difference between smart meters and smart meter gateways
A smart meter is simply a digital meter. As a stand-alone product, this can do little more than its analog predecessor apart from the digital display. The great advantage of the modern meter is that you can now connect your machines and devices to it individually and thereby precisely evaluate energy consumption. A variety of options are available for data transmission. For example, the data from the meter can be read directly via a USB interface and transferred directly to your local network via LAN,WLAN or LoRa-WAN.
Do smart meters only work with electricity meters?
Currently, smart meters are most often used in connection with electricity meters. However, their application can be expanded to include many other areas. For example, LoRa-WAN measurement sensors can also be used to evaluate electrical consumption directly at individual machines. Thanks to their Plug&Play capability, various sensors can be connected to the network.
For example, we have already installed a smart meter that measures water levels at a fish ladder. Other applications coming soon:
- Gas meters
- Water meters
- And much more
- Indoor air measurement
- CO and CO2 measurement

Never before has the availability and supply of energy been such a hot topic. In order to remain competitive in the future, it is essential for companies to have a precise overview of their own energy consumption. In this case study, you will learn how we, together with our technology partner IFOX, have developed a new sensor system based on LoRaWAN that allows us to keep an eye on our energy consumption at all times.
